Roundtable: 'International Peace Mediation Standards? Reviewing the Field, Charting the Way Ahead'

On Tuesday, 21 May 2013, mediatEUr hosted a roundtable on international mediation standards and their relation with the field of international peace mediation.

The meeting was informed by a number of experts in the field:

  • Irena Vanenkova, Executive Director, International Mediation Institute (IMI)
  • Pamela Aall, Senior Vicepresident, United States Institute of Peace (USIP)
  • Simon Mason, Head of the Mediation Support Team, Centre for Security Studies, ETH Zürich (CSS)

International institutions are making steady progress on developing international standards for commercial mediation; the EU's European Code of Conduct for Mediators and the directive on mediation are two key examples of this. What lessons can the field of peace mediation learn from this? How can European institutions working with peace mediators apply the existing international standards? Throughout a full day of discussions, the speakers and fourteen participants at the roundtable tried to answer these and other questions, and spark future dialogue around this rather unexplored topic.

The meeting was hosted at mediatEUr's office in Brussels, and will result in a meeting report to be published shortly.
